Fort Brockhurst

Step into history at Fort Brockhurst, a Victorian-era fortification designed to protect Portsmouth Harbour. Explore the moat, massive walls, and tunnels that make this part of England’s coastal defence system so intriguing.

Facts:

  1. Fort Brockhurst is one of the “Palmerston Follies” built to defend against a French invasion that never came. (Outer defences defending Gosport & Portsmouth still remain, Forts Grange, Fort Rowner & Fort Elson. Fort Gomer demolished in 1960)
  2. The fort’s design incorporates a wet moat and drawbridge for added security.
  3. It was repurposed as a storage depot during World War II.
  4. The interior includes casemates that once housed garrison soldiers.
  5. The fort is now managed by English Heritage and hosts open days.
  6. Its pentagonal shape makes it unique among British fortifications.
