Gilkicker Fort

Gilkicker is a beautiful stretch of coastline and rich in wildlife. Migrating birds pass through twice a year, and it’s a home to other flora and fauna including sea kale and the unique Gilkicker weevil.

Perched on the edge of Stokes Bay, Gilkicker Fort is a historic coastal defence structure with stunning views. Built in the 19th century to protect Portsmouth Harbour, it remains a striking example of military architecture. (One of seven Victorian Forts which still exist in Gosport).

Gilkicker Fort is a Grade II listed semi-circular fort built in the late 19th century to protect Portsmouth Harbour. The fort was decommissioned in 1999, and is being restored and redeveloped into housing.

Facts:

  1. The fort was armed with massive 10-inch rifled muzzle-loading guns.
  2. It was decommissioned in the 20th century and briefly used as a weather station.
  3. The site is a favourite for urban explorers and photographers.
  4. Rare lichens thrive on its ancient Granite & brickwork structure.
  5. During WWII, it served as a lookout for German U-boat activity.
  6. It’s part of the Gosport Heritage Open Days events.
