Gosport High Street offers a mix of history and modern charm. With its pedestrianized layout, it’s home to independent shops, cafes, and markets, while retaining historical features that hint at its past as a bustling naval town.

Facts:

  1. The High Street dates back to the 16th century and grew as a naval supply hub.
  2. It features a clock tower gifted by the Gosport Ratepayers’ Association in 1890.
  3. During WWII, parts of the street were damaged in air raids.
  4. Hidden beneath the street are old cellars used for storage by merchants.
  5. The market tradition here dates back over 300 years.
  6. A sculpture trail along the High Street celebrates Gosport’s naval heritage.
  7. Numerous Alleyways leading off The High Street, such as Bemister Lane, where ‘Press Gangs roamed for ‘Clients to join the Royal Navy’, usually recruited after leaving the host of Public Houses once in The High Street. (so many to be named)
