Gosport Lines – Bastion No.1

The Gosport Lines are a series of fortifications built to defend Portsmouth Harbour. Bastion No.1 is a preserved section showcasing the ingenuity of 18th-century military engineering, now a peaceful spot for walks and exploration.

Facts:

  1. The lines were part of a larger defensive strategy designed by Bernard de Gomme. (1678’s)
  2. Bastion No.1 includes a  wet moat, designed to prevent enemy advances.
  3. The defences were never attacked but served as a deterrent.
  4. Much of the earthworks were constructed by hand using local labour.
  5. The bastion offers panoramic views of Portsmouth and the surrounding countryside.
  6. Sections are incorporated into Gosport’s modern-day parks and walkways.
