Once the lifeblood of the Royal Navy’s food supply, the Royal Clarence Yard’s slaughterhouse was a critical component of this historic victualling yard. Today, it stands as a reminder of the Navy’s innovative logistics that fed sailors worldwide.

Facts

  1. Built in the late 19th century, between 1854 and 1855, it processed meat for Navy ships.
  2. The yard had its own railway system to transport goods.
  3. Meat was salted and preserved here before refrigeration was available.
  4. Nearby buildings stored biscuits, rum, and medical supplies.
  5. The site is part of the Portsmouth Harbour area’s conservation zone.
