The Crescent

The Crescent is an elegant Georgian terrace that exemplifies 18th-century architectural sophistication. Overlooking a serene green space, it was originally designed as luxury housing for naval officers and their families.

Facts:

  1. In 1826 an entrepreneur called Robert Cruickshank engaged a young architect, Thomas Ellis Owen, to create a fashionable new spa resort called Angleseyville.
  2. It was once intended to be the centrepiece of a new marine town called Anglesea which housed prominent naval figures, including admirals.
  3. The gardens feature a sundial commemorating the Battle of Trafalgar.
  4. It was briefly used as a hospital during the Crimean War.
  5. Many of the houses retain original interiors, including fireplaces and mouldings.
  6. The Crescent is part of Gosport’s Conservation Area, protecting its historic character.
